Henderson, NV – On Wednesday, October 1, join Henderson Libraries for a reading and visit with this year’s APPLE Partnership author, Jamar Nicholas. Through his work, he aims to promote anti-bullying, healing, and kindness, and his award-winning writing has received accolades from Artblog, the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), and a number of Glyph Comic Awards. Nicholas has dedicated his career to helping young people realize the power of visual narrative.

A native of Philadelphia, Nicholas began his unique career during college with the creation of a weekly comic, The Adventures of Jamar & Patrick, or Patrick & Jamar, Whatever… in La Salle University’s newspaper, The Collegian. In 1997, he self-published The Jamar Chronicles, two full-length comic books before developing weekly webcomic Detective Boogaloo: Hip-Hop Cop. From there, he served as editorial cartoonist of the Philadelphia Tribune.

Nicholas continued illustrating, cartooning, and publishing, moving on to graphic novels. He hoped his work on American educator, social activist, and author Geoffrey Cana’s 1995 memoir Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun would “open people’s minds to the plight of young men coming of age in underserved neighborhoods.” That graphic novel received several awards, and Nicholas received the Rising Star Award from the Glyph Comics Awards in 2011.

September 2017 brought Nicholas a launch of his original graphic novel, Leon: Protector of the Playground, which made its debut at the 2017 Baltimore Comic Con. He was honored with the 2018 Glyph Comics Award for Best Writer as well as the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics. His latest book, Leon the Extraordinary, was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews and is the first in a series.

“We are grateful that the APPLE Partnership enables award-winning authors to visit our community,” says Henderson Libraries Executive Director Marcie Smedley. “Our local partners are literacy cheerleaders, and we are appreciative that we can share these author events through our combined efforts. Let’s all welcome Jamar to Henderson!”

You won’t want to miss this event, which is open to all ages. Jamar Nicholas will be in the Reading Room at the Paseo Verde Library on Wednesday, October 1 from 6 – 7 p.m. Books will be available for purchase and Nicholas will be available to sign books after his presentation. This free APPLE Partnership event is part of a cooperative effort between Henderson Libraries, the City of Henderson, and the Clark County School District.
